Socrates (Greek: Σωκράτης, invariably anglicized as [sɔkɹətiːz], Sǒcratēs; circa 470– 399 BC) was an ancient Greek philosopher who is widely credited for laying the foundation for Western philosophy.. The main victim of the play is the leading Athenian thinker and teacher Socrates, who is purposely (and unfairly) given many of the standard characteristics of the Sophists. Socrates' fate was written, twenty years before his trial, by the Athenian playwright Aristophanes in a comedy called The Clouds (419 BC). He’s depicted running a philosophical school called The Thinkery where he charges high fees to reveal his wisdom. As evidenced in his text, The Clouds, Aristophanes was a very witty and comical writer. This is a reference to the so-called ‘sophists’. It is perhaps the world’s first extant “ comedy of idea s” and lampoons intellectual fashions in classical Athens.

This is exactly how Socrates is depicted in Aristophanes’ Clouds; but we know perfectly well what the real charges were, and these are not they. Details about Socrates can be derived from three contemporary sources: the dialogues of Plato and Xenophon (both devotees of Socrates), and the plays of Aristophanes.
In this play, Socrates is depicted as a sophist who runs the Phrontisterion (meaning ‘the Thinkery’ or ‘the Think Shop’), a place where he teaches his students the art of ‘speaking well’. ‘Things beneath the earth and things in the sky’ Because of the confusion, maybe it’s worth devoting some time to clearing it up.
Socrates is one of the central characters of The Clouds where he’d depicted as a pompous buffoon, apparently a cross between a natural philosopher like Anaxagoras and a Sophist like Prodicus.
As mentioned earlier, the Socrates that Aristophanes presents is a composite of several current philosophers and sophists, such as Anaxagoras, Diogenes, Protagoras, Hippon, Korax, and Gorgias.
[3] There's an analogy between the clouds and Socrates's thoughts here; just as the clouds are slippery, insubstantial, and hard to get a grasp on, so Socrates's teachings are portrayed as, er, less than weighty (and certainly slick). This article is about the play by Aristophanes.
He has been depicted by some scholars, including Eric Havelock and Walter Ong, as a champion of oral modes of communication, standing up at the dawn of writing against its haphazard diffusion. The play attacks “modern” education and morals as imparted and taught by the radical intellectuals known as the Sophists.
The Clouds (Νεφέλαι / Nephelai) is a comedy written by the celebrated playwright Aristophanes lampooning intellectual fashions in classical Athens. It was originally produced at the City Dionysia in 423 BC and it was not well received, coming last of the three plays competing at the festival that year. “The Clouds“ (Gr: “Nephelai“ ) is a comedy by the ancient Greek playwright Aristophanes, originally produced at the Athens City Dionysia of 423 BCE. In The Clouds, Socrates is very sarcastically portrayed.
