Louis Wirth, American sociologist who pioneered in the study of urban problems. On a return visit to Germany in 1911, he and his sister decided that there were more opportunities for Louis in the United States. Wirth was president (1947) of the American A noted teacher at the University of Chicago from 1926, Wirth blended empirical research and theory in his work and contributed to the emergence of sociology as a profession. Wirth argues that the shift between nomadic civilization and contemporary civilization, and the shift from a predominately rural society to a predominantly urban society, is caused by the shift from agriculture to industrialism.
