I'm new to the game and with the sale this weekend I want to pick up the DLC since it's cheaper but don't know which ones are 'essential'. That said, I loved the game. If you want to buy more, I would recommend either Distant Stars (tons of new anomalies and events plus the L-Cluster) or Apocalypse (marauder empires, planet killers and the Horde) since they are great for spicing up the midgame. In order from most essential to least… Utopia* Federations* Apocalypse* Leviathans; Synthetic Dawn (Bump this one up if you really like the idea of playing killer robots) MegaCorps * = All of these are $20-tiered expansions which feels a little steep considering the feature sets are quite lean.
